The Top 10 Mistakes Novice Screenwriter’s Make
comes out soon!

Scriptcake is an organic approach to screenwriting.

I’ve taught screenwriting for over 20 years and have seen screenwriters struggle with the same issues over and over again. I’m creating this website and podcast for those of you who struggle with these very same issues. It’s designed for beginners but there is also quite a bit of information more seasoned screenwriters might find useful.

Most people think that anything with a beginning, middle and end qualifies as a screenplay idea. It doesn’t. They think that writing something exactly like it happened in real life is what screenwriter’s do. They don’t. They think that action movies just have action and horror movies just have horror and romantic movies just have romance. None of these thoughts are accurate.

The fact of the matter is that screenwriting is a craft and you need to learn to hone that craft. After teaching thousands of students over the years, there are many mistakes that novice screenwriters commonly make that are quite clear to me. This website and podcast is an attempt to nip those issues in the bud and give screenwriters a deeper insight into the heart of screenwriting.

I will show you the most common mistakes screenwriters make and hope that will help you develop your idea into a multi-dimensional story.

Please note that I will not cover screenplay formatting and and other basic elements like this. There are a significant number of books and on-line options to cover this. If you need help with any formatting issues, google it.

I want to focus on issues that aren’t quite as google-able.

What’s the difference between a story and a concept?

Most novice writers think that a concept for a story is actually the story. It is not. Sadly, many screenwriters don’t even know the difference between a story and a concept. The concept is the eye candy. It’s the stuff you see in a trailer for a film. It’s what the audience thinks the story…
